Homeopathic Remedies for Cold Sores and Canker Sores: What Homeopathy Really Does

homeopathic remedies

Homeopathic remedies for cold sores and canker sores don’t claim to kill the herpes virus or heal an ulcer for you. Their aim is to support your immune system as a whole, so your own body is better prepared to deal with the outbreak. The research is small but not empty: in a placebo controlled trial, individualised homeopathy reduced pain and ulcer size in 100 people with canker sores, and a review of 22 trials found homeopathic medicines may have small, specific effects, while asking for better quality studies. Use homeopathy alongside the proven basics in our cold sore guide and our guide to canker sore treatment, never instead of medical care for a baby. For the full picture of natural care, see herpes on lips and our guide to natural remedies for herpes.

The short version

  • The goal of homeopathy is to support your whole system, not to eradicate a virus or an ulcer by itself.
  • Cold sores: remedies traditionally chosen include Natrum muriaticum, Rhus toxicodendron and Sepia. There are no clinical trials on adult cold sores yet.
  • Canker sores: one placebo controlled trial found less pain and smaller ulcers with individualised homeopathy. Borax and Mercurius solubilis are the classic choices.
  • Combine it with what works on the sore itself: an ointment, rest, good food and less stress.
  • Babies are different: a sore, fever or poor feeding in a baby needs a doctor straight away, not a home remedy.

What Is Homeopathy Trying to Do?

Homeopathy works from one idea: the body heals itself, and a remedy is there to inform and prepare your own system so it can respond better. A homeopath chooses a remedy for the whole person, not only for the sore. Two people with the same cold sore can get different remedies, depending on what triggered it, how it feels and how they are in general.

That is the big difference with a cream that is meant to act on the sore. Homeopathy doesn’t claim that the remedy eradicates anything. It’s your immune system that does the work, and the remedy is one way of supporting it, next to sleep, food, movement and calm.

Why the Research Always Asks for “More Studies”

Read almost any paper on homeopathy and it ends the same way: more and better studies are needed. A large review of trials on individualised homeopathy found small, specific treatment effects, but rated most of the evidence as low or unclear quality. A review of homeopathy for skin conditions found too few good trials to say it clearly works for any single skin problem.

In my view, part of the reason is that homeopathy doesn’t fit the usual way of testing. A standard trial gives everyone the same product and measures whether the sore disappears faster. Homeopathy gives each person their own remedy and aims at the whole system, not at clearing a sore by itself. So a “clean” yes or no answer is hard to get, and the call for more research will probably always be there.

That doesn’t mean you should expect a remedy to clear a cold sore or a canker sore for you. Be honest with yourself about what it can and can’t do: homeopathy is a way of supporting your health as a whole, and it works best as part of a bigger picture.

Homeopathic Remedies for Cold Sores

A cold sore is herpes on the lips, caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1). The remedies below are the ones most often named in homeopathic practice. Their descriptions come from traditional use, not from clinical trials.

Natrum muriaticum

Natrum muriaticum is the remedy most often linked with cold sores. It’s traditionally chosen when cold sores come after sun, a fever, grief or emotional stress, often with dry, cracked lips and a pearly blister on the lip.

Rhus toxicodendron (Rhus tox)

Rhus tox is traditionally chosen for itchy, burning blisters with a lot of restlessness. A 2023 review gathered the laboratory and preliminary evidence on Rhus tox and the herpes virus. It found no harm to cells in the lab, but says clearly that clinical trials in people are still needed.

Sepia

Sepia is often named for cold sores around the mouth that come back with hormonal changes, such as around a period.

What the research on herpes shows

  • Children with mouth herpes (2014). In 60 children with herpetic gingivostomatitis, the first herpes infection in the mouth, those who got Mercurius solubilis 30C on top of usual care had a shorter fever, less trouble eating and drinking, and a shorter hospital stay. The study was small and the families knew which group they were in, so it needs confirming in better controlled research.
  • Recurrent cold sores (1994). A small study of 31 people aged 5 to 65 compared two homeopathic approaches for recurring HSV-1. It didn’t compare homeopathy with a placebo, so it can’t tell us how well homeopathy works.
  • One person’s story (2021). A case report describes one person whose herpes didn’t come back for more than 10 years after homeopathic treatment. It’s encouraging, but one case can’t prove the treatment caused it.

Shingles (herpes zoster) is a different virus from cold sores, so studies on shingles don’t count as evidence for cold sores.

Homeopathic Remedies for Canker Sores

A canker sore is not herpes and is not contagious. It’s a small, round mouth ulcer, often linked to stress, a small bite or burn, certain foods or a low B12 or iron level. Not sure which one you have? Our guide on cold sore or canker sore shows the difference.

The canker sore trial

Canker sores actually have the best homeopathy study of the two. In a randomized, placebo controlled trial, 100 people with minor canker sores got either an individualised homeopathic remedy or a placebo. By day 4 and day 6, pain and ulcer size were lower in the homeopathy group, with no side effects reported. It was one study, single blind and only six days long, so it’s a promising start rather than proof.

Borax

Borax is the classic homeopathic remedy for canker sores in the mouth, traditionally chosen for painful ulcers that make eating hard, especially with a hot, dry mouth. This is the highly diluted homeopathic preparation only. Never put household borax powder in your mouth, it’s toxic.

Mercurius solubilis

Mercurius solubilis is traditionally used for mouth ulcers with a lot of saliva, bad breath and a swollen, coated tongue. It’s also the remedy from the children’s study above.

Natrum muriaticum

Natrum muriaticum turns up for canker sores too, especially when they come in times of grief or stress, along with a dry mouth.

How to Use Homeopathic Remedies

  • Choose by the whole picture, not only the sore: what triggered it, how it feels, and how you are in general. A homeopath can help you choose.
  • Follow the label for the potency and how often to take it. Common potencies are 6C and 30C.
  • Let the pellets dissolve under your tongue, away from strong mint, coffee or food, which is how homeopaths traditionally advise taking them.
  • Stop and rethink if nothing changes after a few days, or if the sore gets worse.

Homeopathy Works Best as Part of a Bigger Picture

Whether you use homeopathy or not, cold sores and canker sores come back when your system is under pressure. That’s where the real work is: sleep, good food with enough protein, fruits and vegetables, and less stress. We explain this in how to avoid a herpes outbreak and how long a herpes outbreak lasts.

For the sore itself, pair your remedy with something that soothes and protects the skin. For a cold sore, I use a beeswax ointment at the very first tingle, and in my experience the sore is usually gone within about two days. For more natural options with research behind them, see the strongest natural antivirals for herpes and cold sore essential oils.

Care for the cold sore itself

The Aromafisis beeswax ointment with oregano is handmade from olive oil, beeswax, oregano oil, clary sage and mastic oil, with no preservatives. It’s what I use myself on every outbreak, next to supporting my body as a whole.

Homeopathy for Babies and Children

Small studies on children are not a reason to try homeopathy instead of a doctor. Herpes in a newborn or young baby can become serious quickly and may need hospital treatment. If a baby has sores, a fever, poor feeding or is unusually sleepy, get medical care straight away. Read more in our guide to cold sores in babies and newborns.

When to See a Doctor

  • A baby or young child with mouth sores, a fever or trouble drinking. Go to your paediatrician or the emergency room.
  • A cold sore near the eye. See an eye doctor the same day.
  • A cold sore that hasn’t healed after two weeks, or outbreaks that keep coming back. See your GP or a dermatologist.
  • A canker sore that hasn’t healed after three weeks, is very large or keeps coming back. See your dentist, and your GP for a blood test (iron, B12, folate).
  • A weak immune system, pregnancy or a long term illness. Talk to your doctor before relying on any home remedy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best homeopathic remedy for cold sores?

Natrum muriaticum is the remedy most often used for cold sores, especially when they follow sun, a fever or stress. Rhus tox and Sepia are also common. Homeopaths choose by the whole person, and there are no clinical trials on adult cold sores yet.

What is the best homeopathic remedy for canker sores?

Borax and Mercurius solubilis are the classic homeopathic remedies for canker sores in the mouth. One placebo controlled trial of 100 people found individualised homeopathy reduced pain and ulcer size within six days.

Is there a homeopathic cure for cold sores?

No. Homeopathy doesn’t claim to cure cold sores or remove the herpes virus. Its aim is to support your immune system as a whole, so your own body handles outbreaks better.

Does homeopathy boost the immune system?

That is homeopathy’s aim: to inform and prepare your own system rather than act on the sore directly. Research hasn’t confirmed this yet, so see it as one part of a healthy routine with sleep, good food and less stress.

Can I use homeopathy with other cold sore remedies?

Yes. Homeopathic remedies are usually taken by mouth, so you can still use an ointment, a cold sore patch or other natural care on the sore itself.

Is homeopathy safe for babies with cold sores?

Don’t use homeopathy instead of a doctor for a baby. A cold sore, fever or poor feeding in a baby needs medical care straight away.
