Home remedies for herpes on lips

A cold sore always seems to arrive at the worst moment: before a wedding, a meeting, a first date. What you want is for it to calm down fast, stop throbbing, and disappear before anyone notices. Then you want it to stop coming back. This guide shows you the natural remedies that have been tested on real cold sores, and the daily habits that keep them away longer.
First, the honest part. Cold sores are caused by herpes simplex, a lasting virus that stays in the body. Nothing on this page, natural or medical, removes it. What natural care can do is make each cold sore shorter and milder, and make them come back less often. That is comfort and symptom care, and done consistently, it makes a real difference.
The short version: what to do today
- At the first tingle, apply a beeswax ointment, raw honey, or a lemon balm or propolis cream several times a day.
- Do not pick, squeeze or pop the blister.
- Use your own cup, towel and lip balm, and do not kiss babies or anyone with a weak immune system.
- Start lysine, and go easy on nuts, chocolate and sugar until it heals.
- Protect your lips from the sun with an SPF lip balm, and keep them from drying out.
Is it really a cold sore?
Not every sore around the mouth is herpes. Cold sores appear on the outside of the lips or on the edge of the lip line, usually as a cluster of small blisters after a tingling feeling. Sores inside the mouth, on the gums or inner cheek, are more often canker sores, which are not caused by a virus and are not contagious. Here is how to tell a cold sore or canker sore apart.
Herpes can also show up beyond the lips, on the chin, cheek, nose, or occasionally the tongue. If yours is not on the lip itself, see our guide to a herpes outbreak on the face and the tongue.
If you have never had a cold sore confirmed, or it looks unusual, a dermatologist can diagnose it, and a swab of a fresh blister gives a clear answer. Treating the right thing is what makes natural care work. For the full list of early signs, read herpes outbreak symptoms.
Viral load: why your cold sores keep coming back
Understanding this one idea changes how you look after your lips.

Where the virus hides
After your first cold sore, the virus does not stay on your lip. It moves along a nerve and settles in a nerve cluster near the jaw. There it sleeps, and in that state the body cannot clear it. A 2023 review explains that this sleeping infection usually stays for life, and researchers writing in Nature Communications in 2024 confirm that it is the source of every repeat cold sore, out of reach of any current treatment.
What “viral load” means for you
Picture two amounts of virus:
- The virus sleeping in the nerve. This is its home base. Nothing available today lowers it. In that 2024 study, an experimental gene editing treatment removed more than 90% of the sleeping virus from the face nerves of mice, and those mice shed much less virus. It is promising science, but not something people can use yet.
- How often it wakes up and how much reaches your lip. When the virus wakes, it travels down the nerve and multiplies on the skin. That is your cold sore, and it is when you are most contagious. This is the part your daily care can influence.
You can carry it even with no sore
The virus sometimes wakes up without causing a blister. Back in 1953, doctors found herpes virus in the mouths of healthy adults and children with no sign of infection. A later study of genital herpes found the same pattern, with virus on the skin on about 1 in 5 days, often with no sore, and the highest amounts on days with a visible sore.
In plain terms: a calmer virus wakes less often and brings less of itself to your lip. That means fewer cold sores, smaller ones, faster healing, and less chance of passing it on. The more thorough you are with remedies, sun protection, sleep and stress, the quieter it tends to stay. It does not make the virus go away. It makes it bother you far less.
Cold sore stages, and how long each one lasts
A cold sore moves through tingling, blistering, weeping, crusting and healing. Remedies work best in the very first stage, before the blister appears, so learning to recognise that tingle is the single most useful skill. We explain each step, including a dedicated cold sore section, in herpes outbreak stages.
Most cold sores heal within one to two weeks, and good care often shortens that. For the typical timeline and what speeds it up, see how long does a herpes outbreak last.
Beeswax: the remedy I use on every cold sore
If I could only keep one thing in my bag, it would be a beeswax ointment. I put it on at the first tingle, and in my experience the outbreak is usually gone within about two days. It does not sting. The beeswax smooths the blister over completely, which stops the cracking and pulling that make a cold sore so painful on moving lips.
The one I use is the Aromafisis beeswax ointment with oregano, handmade from olive oil, beeswax, oregano oil, clary sage oil and mastic oil, with no preservatives. Nobody pays me to recommend it. I recommend it because it works for me.
What the research says
One person’s experience is not a study, so here is the evidence behind it.
- Beeswax soothes and protects broken skin. A 2025 study in Scientific Reports found beeswax extract was strongly anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, and it slowed two other viruses in the lab. It has not yet been tested on herpes directly, but it explains why a sore settles so quickly under it and is less likely to get infected.
- Bee products act against viruses. Reviews from 2022 and 2026 gathered the antiviral research on honey, propolis and beeswax, including their effects on herpes.
- Propolis, which is roughly 30% beeswax, heals cold sores faster. In a placebo controlled trial, a 3% propolis ointment healed cold sores in an average of 6.2 days compared with 9.8 days, with earlier pain relief.
- Oregano and sage come from a plant family that blocks herpes. Extracts from the mint family, including lemon balm, sage and thyme, reduced herpes infection by more than 90% in the lab.
How to use it: apply a thin layer with a clean fingertip or cotton bud several times a day, starting at the first tingle. Never double dip a used finger back into the jar. Keep it away from your eyes.
Other natural cold sore remedies with research behind them
These remedies have been tested on people with cold sores. To see how they rank against each other, read our guide to the strongest natural antiviral for herpes.
Raw honey
In a small trial, people treated one cold sore with honey and another with a standard medical cream. With honey, cold sores lasted 35% shorter and hurt 39% less, and three cold sores cleared completely with honey. Only 16 people took part, so it is promising rather than proven. Dab on raw or medical grade honey four times a day.
Lemon balm
Lemon balm is one of the best studied natural cold sore remedies. In a trial of 116 people, 41% rated their healing as very good with lemon balm cream, compared with 19% on a placebo. Another trial of 66 people saw symptoms ease within two days. Start it within the first three days of a cold sore.
Zinc
A zinc oxide and glycine cream shortened cold sores and eased blistering, soreness and itching compared with a placebo. Taken by mouth, zinc halved the number of cold sores in a small group of people who got them often, from six a year to three. People with low zinc levels also tend to heal more slowly.
Lysine and vitamin C
Lysine works against arginine, which the virus needs to multiply. In a six month trial, people on lysine had 2.4 times fewer outbreaks, and doses above 3 g a day worked where under 1 g did not. Vitamin C with bioflavonoids shortened cold sores from 9.7 days to 4.2 days in a double blind trial. If you have kidney problems or take regular medication, ask a pharmacist before starting either.
Vitamin E oil
In a study of 50 people with cold sores, dabbing vitamin E oil on the sore every four hours brought quick, lasting pain relief, and the sores healed faster than expected.
Essential oils
Several essential oils, including thyme, hyssop, ginger and chamomile, reduced herpes virus by more than 90% in the lab. That is a lab result, not a trial on people, and undiluted oils can burn the thin skin of the lips. Which oils to choose and how to dilute them safely is covered in cold sore essential oils.
What about pharmacy products?
Some shop bought cold sore products contain the same ingredients as above, such as zinc, lemon balm or propolis. We compared what is on the shelf in cold sore remedies over the counter.
Comfort care while it heals
- Hands off. Picking or popping spreads the virus and can leave a scar.
- Keep lips soft. Cracking skin reopens the sore. A beeswax based balm keeps it supple.
- Avoid salty, spicy and acidic foods like crisps, citrus and tomato sauce, which sting an open sore.
- Use a straw for drinks, and do not share cups, cutlery, towels or lip products.
- Wash your hands after touching your lips, and never touch your eyes afterwards.
- Sleep well. If throbbing keeps you up, our guide on how to sleep during a herpes outbreak has simple tips.
How to avoid your next cold sore: the takeaways
This is where the viral load work really happens. Each habit below helps the sleeping virus stay asleep. For a complete trigger list, see how to avoid a herpes outbreak and cold sore triggers.
- Protect your lips from the sun. Sun exposure is one of the best known cold sore triggers, so wear an SPF lip balm outdoors, on the slopes and at the beach.
- Keep your lips from chapping in wind and cold with a rich beeswax balm.
- Manage stress. Stress hormones weaken the immune cells that keep herpes quiet, which is why cold sores often follow a hard week.
- Sleep enough and look after yourself when you have a cold or fever, both common triggers.
- Take lysine daily if cold sores come often, and go easy on high arginine foods like nuts, seeds and chocolate.
- Cut back on sugar, alcohol and cannabis, which a 2023 review links to weaker defence against herpes.
- Keep zinc and vitamin D topped up. Low zinc is linked to slower healing, and low vitamin D to higher herpes rates.
- Have your remedy ready. Keep a beeswax ointment in your bag so you can treat the very first tingle.
Herpes in other places
Herpes simplex can also cause sores in the genital area, and some people get both. If that applies to you, our guide to genital herpes outbreak treatment at home covers the same approach for that area, including extra comfort tips.
When to see a clinician
- A sore near your eye, or a red, painful or watering eye. See an eye doctor the same day, as herpes in the eye can damage vision.
- A baby or young child with sores around the mouth, or a newborn who has been kissed by someone with a cold sore. Contact your GP or paediatrician straight away.
- Your first cold sore, or you are not sure it is one. A dermatologist can confirm it.
- Sores spreading across the face or body, especially if you have eczema.
- A weakened immune system, very frequent cold sores, or a sore that has not healed in two weeks.
