Sour stomach, better known as acid reflux or indigestion, to an average person is very common. As a matter of fact, almost all of us experience it, at least once in a month regardless of our age. The most common cause for a sour stomach is overindulging in eating, which causes an acid reflux in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Other causes include constipation, unrestricted consumption of beverages such as tea, coffee, alcohol and soft drinks, going to bed or lying face down immediately after a meal, spicy food, ulcers, appendicitis, kidney stones, diarrhea, stomach infection as well as menstrual cramps in women.

The symptoms to look out for include – queasiness or vomiting, stomach bloating, regurgitation (also known as vomiting in the mouth), abdominal pain, heartburn, burping and loss of appetite. While over-the-counter medications can give temporary relief from the pain associated with sour stomach, here are a few home remedies which can help prevent sour stomach.

Home Remedies for Sour Stomach

1. Carrot Juice

Carrots are known as power food and can help the stomach get better. In a blender, mix together a few carrots, a banana and a bit of water. Drink this juice. It will help the tummy absorb all the acids and gas that are causing discomfort in the stomach.

2. Milk

Warm milk provides relief from constipation. Mix a little honey to the milk to help keep the stomach lining smooth.

3. Carom Seeds

An effective and fast working remedy is to roast a teaspoon of carom seeds in a pan. Allow the seeds to cool and crush them lightly with a rolling-pin. Mix together with a pinch of salt. It is very effective for stomach pain and provides relief from gas as well.

4. Lemon

In almost all home remedies, lemons are used to cure indigestion, stomach pain, coughs and many other problems. Juice of one lemon mixed with honey and water is very effective.

5. Yogurt

Yogurt is a very effective remedy for people who have diarrhea and indigestion. Mix some crushed cumin seeds and salt in a bowl of yogurt and have it, at least twice in a day.

6. Soda Water

A glass of soda water mixed with juice of half a lemon and some black salt also does wonders in curing stomach unease.

7. Asafoetida

Add a pinch of asafoetida to the food that you cook or mix it with a glass of warm milk.

8. Hot Water Bag

This is a good remedy for sour stomach, specifically, resulted due to menstrual cramps. Lie down on your back and place a hot water bag wrapped in a cloth on your abdomen.

9. Baking Soda

Baking soda (one teaspoon) mixed with a glass of warm water can help relieve stomach pain.

10. Cinnamon and Ginger Tea

Add two cinnamon sticks and ½ teaspoon of grated ginger to a glass of warm water. Allow the mixture to rest for 5 minutes and then sip on the tea.

11. Aniseed

Take a teaspoon of aniseed in a cup, pour over some water and let it soak overnight. Drink water the following morning on an empty stomach.

Burnt toast is an effective remedy for food poisoning, as it offsets the toxins.

13. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

Add a teaspoon of ACV to a glass of warm water and drink it before you have your meal.

14. Pawpaw

Eating pawpaw on a daily basis prevents stomach ache.

15. Mixture of Dry Spices

Take about a teaspoon each of coriander seeds, fennel seeds, cumin seeds and add to some boiling water. Allow the concoction to cool and drink it after your meals.

16. Green Tea

A cup of green tea everyday in the morning will help reduce the acidity level in your stomach.

Note- Avoid using excessive sugar with green tea. Instead, use a teaspoon of honey.

King Edward potatoes are ideal for stomach pain due to ulcers. Grind the potatoes to get the required amount of potato juice. Dilute the juice by adding ¾ cups of water. Add 1-2 teaspoon each of lemon juice and honey, and mix well. Drink the juice on an empty stomach in the morning.

As the old saying goes, ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away.’ Foods that are rich in fiber help your digestive system and should always be included in your meals. Always eat an apple with the peel as opposed to without the peel.

Bale pulp mixed with a glass of butter milk is an effective remedy for stomach ache.

22. Cola Syrup

Cola syrup is ideal for acid reflux.

23. Pomegranate

Pomegranate seeds are an effective remedy for diarrhea. Mix the seeds in a bowl of yogurt or just have them on their own with a bit of salt and black pepper.

24. Ginger

Add some grated ginger to a glass of warm water, add a teaspoon of honey and sip it. One can add ginger to other forms of tea as well, to cure the problem of indigestion. Ginger beer is as effective as natural ginger.

Make a paste from a few dates and mix it with a bit of honey. Have it at least three times in a day.

Herbal Remedies for Sour Stomach

28. Mint Leaves

Raw mint leaves are very effective in treating stomach pain and leave your mouth feeling fresh. Alternatively, mix a teaspoon of mint juice, lime juice and ginger juice together with a pinch of rock salt.

29. Aloe Vera

Besides being a good remedy for various skin problems, aloe vera is also effective against sour tummy. Consume it before and after a meal to regulate the digestive system.

30. Tamarind Leaves

Make a thin paste of 3 grams tamarind leaves, add to this a pinch or two of rock salt (1 gram, if you like the taste) and mix well. Have it after your meal to help with digestion.

31. Rosemary

Rosemary has a soothing effect on your body. Add a few drops of rosemary oil to a tub of water and take a bath in it to feel relaxed.

32. Chamomile Tea

Chamomile works as an anti-inflammatory and helps relax the upper digestive track muscles.

  • Take one to two teaspoons of chamomile tea in a cup and pour over it some water. Cover the cup and allow it to steep for 20 minutes.
  • Alternatively, if you are using chamomile tea bags, pour water over the bag, cover it and allow it to steep for 10 minutes.

33. Parsley

Parsley works as an antioxidant. Soak parsley leaves in water for 2 hours and then drink this water throughout the day.

34. Celery Leaves

Make a paste of celery leaves and add to it a little rock salt and consume immediately.

35. Fennel Seeds

Fennel seeds are very effective for stomach pain due to gas or cramps. Pour some boiling water to a cup and add to it 1 teaspoon of fennel seeds. Cover the cup and allow it to steep for 10 minutes. Strain the seeds and drink the water on an empty stomach before your meals.

36. Thyme Tea

Thyme gives relief from gas and stomach cramps. Mix 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves in a cup of boiling water and allow it to stand for 10 minutes. Strain the water and consume on an empty stomach at least 3 times in a day.

Symptoms of Sour Stomach

Nausea

If you feel queezy and uneasy in your stomach, it could be a sign of pregnancy, or it could just be sour stomach. This is a tall tale sign that something is not right, and it may not be anything more than a stomach gone bad.

Burping

You may think burping constantly is a symptom of drinking too many carbonated drinks or maybe from catching too many air bubbles while eating. These both are true. But even more than that, it is always a good sign of having a sour stomach.

Extra Fullness

Do you feel full in a way you should not? There are days when I don’t eat anywhere near enough to where it should cause me to feel that full. But it feels like a lump at the bottom of my stomach for some reason. This can surely be from feeling sour stomach.

  • Refrain from juices such as grapefruit, orange, tomato and pineapple as they are acidic.

  • If your stomach can not tolerate dairy and gluten, avoid them.
